RARE Office, Berlin, with artist Giacomo Albano, Rome (Markthalle IX)
What: An eco-friendly scheme with dramatic organic forms.
Description: A variety of mixed-use buildings along the Spree banks topped by the Mehrzweck-Hochgarten, a landscaped street in the sky with entertainment and sightseeing entirely equipped for renewable energy production. The buildings are set back 30 meters, allowing public access to the river, where activities can take place.
Why: The designers feel Köpenicker Straße currently acts like a wall, preventing people from reaching the Spree. RARE's project envisions organic, permeable development that invites the public through.
Why not: Could be too complicated for developers with their eyes on the bottom line although RARE are keen to underline the sustainability of the project.
