Personalausweis

The small town of Cottbus, some 120km southeast of Berlin, provides the unlikely setting for a bustling and internationally esteemed film festival.

The Filmfestival Cottbus, conceived two years after the fall of The Wall, is one of the most important platforms for Eastern European cinema worldwide, featuring 140 films from 33 countries from an East-West co-production market.

In addition to its established reputation as an intimate and stimulating forum for filmmakers and enthusiasts, the 21st edition will be a bustling affair: expect nine world-, seven international- and 43 German-premieres screened throughout the festival’s 13 sections.

This is your annual opportunity to hobnob with film luminaries from Georgia to Czechoslovakia to Romania to Finland to Kyrgyzstan, with this year a clear prevalence of Russian and Polish productions.

And since Cottbus lies so near the border, why not take a little trip into Poland for cheap smokes during an film Pause?
