As your best bet for English-language films through the summer, Berlin’s Freiluftkinos have put together a summer programme with an eye to escape.
Adolescent runaways woo hearts in Moonrise Kingdom, a typical Wes Anderson exercise in regressive childhood tropes and impeccably tailored uniforms (Kreuzberg, Aug 22, 21:30 & Hasenheide, Aug 18, 20:45), while an older but none-the-wiser set drop out in Bar25 – Der Film (Insel, Aug 20, 21:00), a gratuitously misty-eyed homage to the lost Berlin institution’s drugfucked dropouts and sweet beats.
Dropping the self-congratulating grandeur, Marley documents the life and times of reggae superstar Bob Marley (Aug 12, 21:30, Aug 14, 21:00) with a soundtrack to roll on such summer nights.
As the summer blockbusters swoop in, popcorn fare gets a dark edge with The Dark Knight Rises (Hasenheide Aug 25, 20:30), the next Batman installation. For those with foggy memories or who simply missed Heath Ledger’s career-defining turn as the Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight, warm up two days earlier (Aug 23, 20:30) at Hasenheide (photo).
Less sinister stuff includes Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest, The Dictator, with Cohen’s bite-less politics crassly befriending doe-eyed American vegans (Jul 29, 21:30).
Smaller budgets and smaller running times come via the British Shorts (Insel, Aug 3, 21:30) – a generic mishmash from the best of young Britain. For understated British humour try Salmon Fishing in Yemen (Insel, Aug 16, 21:00).
