    A child of Palestinian refugees who fled to Lebanon after the 1948 war, Hatoum made one of her most striking pieces - "Undercurrent" (2008; above) - about scattered identity: rope is woven into a red square at the piece's center; the red ropes meander out from the central square, each rope ending with a candle.
