The ex-company men
Many Hollywood dollars have been made off of the financial crisis, because what is a better story than the events following a firing? Affleck’s Bobby Walker loses his high-profile, high-salary job, and struggles to swallow his pride and get back on his feet, with Cooper’s troubled, baggy eyes and Jones’ beleaguered movements illustrating different aspects of the human drama. The Company Men is best, however, when it shows the excessive lifestyles that caused the crisis in the first place. This is thought-provoking, although the film ultimately succumbs to sentimentality.
The Company men | Directed by John Wells (USA, 2010) with Ben Affleck, Cris Cooper, Tommy Lee Jones. Opens July 7
