Dudes and conventional violence
In this remake, Statham plays a hit man, a specialist in assassinations that look like accidents. His new apprentice (Foster) is actually the son of one of his latest victims. Trouble is, of course, afoot. Statham’s raw physicality – as usual, he does a brilliant job as the bone crushing killing machine – cannot make up for the rather predictable plot, which fails to develop any suspense and lacks a genuine finale. However, the succession of good old-fashioned, stylishly filmed violent encounters does have entertainment potential too, probably best enjoyed in combination with a six-pack and a few buddies.
THE MECHANIC | Directed by Simon West (USA 2011) with Jason Statham, Ben Foster. Opens April 7
