The third film adaptation of Danish bestselling crime author Jussi Adler-Olsen's twisted work has the makings of something truly diabolical: serial kidnappings, religious cults, nightmares awakened by a bottled message washed ashore. But while nearly every trick in the book on Scandinavian thrillers is used to keep things lurid and juicy, the kink-fest ultimately proves less than satisfying for a too-straightforward resolution undeserving of its hot build-up. Kaas and Co. are pro in bringing some real dramatic weight and odd-couple chemistry into the mix, but can't quite elevate the fun beyond the disposable pleasure of a fast airplane read.
A Conspiracy of Faith (Erlösung) | Directed by Hans Petter Moland (Denmark, Sweden, Germany Norway 2016) with Nikolaj Lie Kaas, Fares Fares. Starts June 9.
