PREVIEW: A Dangerous Method
While the German distributor emphasises the dark nature of desire itself in the title, the original name of the film focuses on dangers in the ways psychological illness is treated. Cronenberg’s film lies somewhere in between, because – and this is Cronenberg’s 21st-century take on the birth of psychoanalysis – the question is not how to diagnose an illness; it’s how to define an illness in the first place. Mortensen as Freud and Fassbender as Jung battle it out, with Knightley as their patient/lover/demonstration object.
