A trip to the zoo
Are we shackled or freed by emotionality? This is one dilemma at the heart of Indonesian director Edwin’s story of Lana (Cheryl), abandoned in Jakarta’s zoo as a young girl. Upon growing up and falling in love with a cowboy, she leaves her now-native environment and a surrogate family of diverse mammals. Her downfall appears inevitable. But as any zoologist knows, animals react to adversity with stoicism rather than self-pity and Lana’s story, far from embracing anthropomorphic sentimentality, errs with perseverance on the side of self-preservation.
