Christopher Hampton’s screenplay really should have made more of Doris Lessing’s novella on two hot mothers who begin affairs with each other’s sons, unleashing a trickle of destructive passion. Instead, the protagonists struggle with lines that plop straight to the bottom of the azure ocean lapping the properties of an Antipodean no-man’s idyll in which issues of selfish, consuming love find minimal credibility only in the nuanced performances delivered by Watts and Wright.
