Inspired by events in World War II, this film centres on the efforts of the Tuskegee Airmen, a group of African American pilots who set out to prove that they are as good as their white American comrades when they are finally given the chance to fight against the Luftwaffe in 1944. Inevitably, Red Tails succumbs to certain B-movie characteristics: dogfight scenes, splash-of-blood shock effects and bad-guy stereotyping – supplemented by some sentimental male bonding and a little love story. Good acting and occasionally witty dialogue fail to compensate.
