Araki returns to the bleak teen-angst sci-fi that made him a cult icon in the 1990s with films like The Doom Generation. And it’s what he does best. Smith and his handful of beautiful and bi-curious teen friends play fast and loose with their sexuality while the world falls apart around them. It’s “sex doesn’t have to be so complicated” paired with “strange is the new normal”: Araki presents a world where sexuality isn’t damning, but the rest of life is, bringing back the alt-teen cult flick. We needed it.
