Nairobi Half Life
Smiley youngster Mwas (Joseph Wairimu) wants to become a theatre player and moves to the Kenyan capital. He gets busted without reason and hooks up with Oti (Olwenya Maina) – who runs a criminal gang – whilst in prison. Despite the ensuing violence, Mwas finds work as an actor and begins a doomed double life.
Nairobi Half Life is the second production supported and mentored by One Fine Day Films, a Berlin-based company founded in 2008 by Marie Steinman and Tom Tykwer in cooperation with Nairobi production company Ginger Ink. The initiative aims to provide advice and know-how to Africans in Africa, enabling actors, writers and directors to take creative and executive control of their work.
It’s a unique endeavour and this is the only chance you’ll have to catch its result in Berlin, in the company of producers Tykwer and Sarika Hemi Lakhani as well as director Gitonga and lead actor Wairimu.
Subtitles are in German but the storyline speaks for itself.
