Timed for German release on Valentine’s Day, this tale of high school sweethearts Celeste and Jesse (Jones and Samberg) who marry young, divorce and try to stay friends is not an ode to everlasting devotion. Neither is it quite what it wants to be: an ode to the honestly observed realities of moving on. It is, however, a bit of both, and does well to link the loss of a partner with the loss of illusions about oneself that such a process inevitably involves. Humour, and Jones’ performance, go some way in making this cup half full.
Celeste and Jesse Forever | Directed by Lee Toland Krieger (USA 2012) with Rashida Jones, Andy Samberg. Starts February 14
