Impossible to summarise, this densely atmospheric, wickedly metaphoric drama set around a Thai hospital (see interview) amuses, mystifies and moves through its transcendent view of life and the easy but deeply reverential way it approaches afterlife. Sprawling in vision and magnificent in style, those who allow themselves to tread into Weerasethakul’s hushed, cryptic, feverishly luminous world of wandering spirits and unspoken dread will be treated to a cinematic feat so nourishing yet reason-defying that it’s truly miraculous.
Cemetary of Splendour | Directed by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Thailand 2015) with Jenjira Pongpas. Starts January 14
