Hartmann delivers a singular debut in her at-times-sweeping, at-times-microscopic study of life in a small Danish town, focused on a taciturn teen increasingly fascinated by her charismatic new lady teacher. Zooming in and out of easy-breathing, naturalistic tableaux, the film belies its coolheaded subjects and glacial pace with a keen, often ruthless dramatic eye. Many will find it slow-burning to the point of suffocation, but there are tender, worthwhile embers amid the ice.
Limbo | Directed by Anna Sofie Hartmann (Denmark, Germany 2014) with Annika Nuka Matthiasen, Sofia Nolsøe, Mikkelsen. Starts September 23
