Greek debt? Greek cinema!
A mysterious group that meets regularly in an empty gymnasium, the "Alps" seek out recently bereaved families and offer a service: to act as surrogates for the deceased – dress in their clothes, adopt their habits and tastes, fulfill their familial obligations – and thus alleviate the grieving process. Treated with the same deadpan absurdist, staccato storytelling and clinical cinematography that so distinguished Lanthimos' breakthrough Dogtooth, this deliciously macabre third solo feature sustains the director's promise as one of today's most innovative and intelligently provocative auteurs.
Alps (Alpen) | Directed by Giorgos Lanthimos (Greece 2011) with Aggeliki Papoulia, Ariane Labed. Starts June 14
