Until it dissolves somewhat into a more conventional (though still expertly shot) ghetto war pic, this year’s Palme d’Or winner is a gritty, thought-provoking drama about displacement and identity directed with exceptional finesse. Dealing with the timely subject of refugees and their integration in Europe, it follows a pretend-family from Sri Lanka as they settle down in the Parisian suburbs, only to find violence again. Aspects of the cultural, emotional and existential conflicts are recreated to enthralling effect, missing only a bang of an ending.
Dheepan | Directed by Jacques Audiard (France 2015) with Jesuthasan Antonythasan, Kalieaswari Srinivasan. Starts December 10
