Charlotte and Caroline von Lengefeld are the daughters of a provincially impoverished aristocratic widow. Caroline has married money and Charlotte is also in search of financial security when she encounters the young and dashing playwright Friedrich von Schiller (Stetter). Graf’s version of their purported ménage à trois combines innocence with the atmospherics of revolutionary emotiveness post-1789 in a solid if occasionally pedestrian evocation of an era in which private and public passions were the mainstay of creativity.
