Films dealing with the military-industrial complex do well to keep their narrative as oblique as their subject and Hochhäusler eschews obvious connections in favour of a flawed central character, journalist Fabian (Fitz), whose private demons form part of a pervasively noxious backdrop to the story he’s investigating: the fate of traumatised Bundeswehr veterans who come home to work on toxic waste depots. The correlatives are clear, but they make a valid point: the system is inescapable.
