It seems a little unkind to compare any primarily image-based nature documentary with the output of the BBC over the last 20 years. That said, Mark Verkerk’s film follows that blueprint so loyally here it proves difficult to disconnect the two. Die neue Wildnis does a fine job of documenting the wide range of wildlife in his native Netherlands – from the breezy summer and difficult winter to the green shoots of spring – it’s just that our taste buds have come to expect much better.
