With dreams of performing, Ali (Christina Aguilera) leaves dead-end Iowa for the bright lights of Los Angeles, where she quickly finds her way onstage in a nearly bankrupt club. While club owner Tess (Cher) promises that here, “nothing’s what it seems,” Burlesque is everything you would expect: megastar wattage, big budget, brassy cliché. It offers dazzling (though rarely “burlesque”) numbers, fast cuts and diva trills – strung along a predictable plot and second-rate script.
BURLESQUE | Directed by Steven Antin (USA 2010) with Cher, Christina Aguilera and Stanley Tucci. Opens January 6.
