Incredibly as expected
The adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer’s book, due for general release right after it's Berlinale premiere, is already raising hackles in the US, where, despite an Oscar nomination, critics are objecting to its use of 9/11 images at the expense of the novel’s subtext on the uses of memory. So many of these images are seared onto our collective memory that doing anything critically relevant in a medium that works visually (as opposed to textually) was always going to be a challenge, one that Daldry seems to have underestimated.
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close | Directed by Stephen Daldry (USA 2011) with Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Thomas Horn. Starts February 16
