Winner of the Exberliner award at this year’s Achtung Berlin film festival, dffb alumnus Jonas Rothlaender’s debut feature sees young doctor Fabian (Golo Euler) leave Berlin for Lisbon in order to win back his ex-girlfriend Doro (Luise Heyer). The two gradually rekindle their romance but soon find themselves haunted by past mistakes.
What sounds like your run-of-the-mill melodramatic sitcom scenario on paper turns out to be a wholly convincing and pared-down love story, as Fado offers a sincere and often raw look at how engulfing jealousy can plague a relationship. Alexander Haβkerl‘s stunning cinematography creates an intoxicatingly authentic portrait of Lisbon and is supported by intense performances from both leads, keeping the viewer hooked and forgiving of some familiar beats. Luise Heyer deserves particular praise for her magnetic turn, ensuring that her character’s shifting and complex emotions towards the re-emergence of her partner’s old ways always ring true.
Fado | Directed by Jonas Rothlaender (Germany / Portugal, 2016) with Golo Euler, Luise Heyer. Starts September 1
