This German language documentary follows a luxury cruise trip from Germany to Africa, during which affluent grizzled tourists, mostly widowed women, dance and flirt with professional escorts of their age. As the past gradually unfolds, we get to participate in some of their intimate moments. Paradoxically, this artificially constructed fairyland glows with undisguised sincerity and well-regulated balance between profundity and frivolity. Dealing with difficult themes of ageing and death, it celebrates bons vivants without indulging in first-world problems.
Die letzten Gigolos | Directed by Stephan Bergmann (Germany 2014) with Peter Nemela, Bärbel Schlömer, Heinz Löffelbein. Starts January 29
