Raised by two mums herself, Maya Newell lifts the lid on the hot topic of gay parenting with her documentary Gayby Baby, following four families in turn as their pre-teen offspring go about their daily business of getting into stage school or moving to Fiji. Disappointingly simplistic, Gayby Baby comes to the rather underwhelming conclusion that gay families face the same problems as any other. And neatly schismatic in its structure, it's more important as a political statement, raising questions that still resound around Canberra's parliamentary corridors.
Gayby Baby | Directed by Maya Newell (Australia 2015). Starts June 23.
