Taking a full-frontal run at a number of issues, Sattouf’s gender-bending farce on the subjugation of men as a loosely styled Cinderella fable set in an Islamic single-party state grapples with hermaphrodites, burqas and a private language of matriarchal authority. The vision is consistently conceived and often hilarious, but trips up more than just metaphorically when negotiating the fine line between concealment and revelation, leaving a little too little to the imagination.
