Zwischen Welten hits Berlin cinemas on March 27.
At this year’s Berlinale, mixed reactions greeted Aladag’s follow-up to the award-winning Die Fremde, with its portrayal of a German ISAF unit struggling to assess its role in the Kunduz village entrusted to its protection. Zehrfeld is excellent as a morally embattled commander, Ahmady personifies the neediness of his Afghan interpreter and the original location cinematography is stunningly prescient. More pro-responsibility than anti-war, Aladag’s film sticks to its ambivalent guns. Not completely satisfying perhaps, but honest.
