Tying shoes and counting cranberries
Loosely based on a true story. A group of handicapped adults are encouraged by out-of-work actor Alex (Gudnason) to take themselves seriously by taking the stage at a local concert. The film does well to use Alex as a conduit for audience empathy, allowing rather than forcing viewers to engage with a serious issue as he moves from self-involvement to self-awareness. Predictability, however, spoils the effect. Gilbert Grape this ain’t.
