Not fully clothed
If you remember the 12-year-old Kristen Stewart in Panic Room, you know already that she can do a lot more than moon vainly over some pale undead guy. Between all this teenage crap she made a small personal drama Welcome to the Rileys, in which she again shows remarkable complexity and depth.
Unfortunately, the film doesn’t know what to do with that, or indeed, the talent of James Gandolfini and Melissa Leo, who play a middle-aged couple whose life is being torn apart by the death of their daughter. When Gandolfini escapes the house on a business trip to New Orleans and meets a runaway stripper (Stewart), the healing begins, but not without many ups and downs, all of which feel very scripted and not very realistic.
It is a shame that individually interesting scenes never quite add up to a movie.
WELCOME TO THE RILEYS | Directed by Jake Scott (USA 2010) with James Gandolfini, Kristen Stewart, Melissa Leo. Opens April 7
