Jappeloup comes to Berlin cinemas on February 6.
Seabiscuit with a French accent? The underdog sports movie returns in this account of real-life Pierre Durand and his trusty steed Jappeloup who overcome a puny start, early victories and crushing defeats before cruising to a gold medal victory in the 1988 Olympics. Canet’s screenplay saves the film, paying attention to the existential trials of Pierre. The camera work is highly impressive, but the endless slow motion sequences of horses leaping over fences become a little tiresome. Entertaining, yet conventional.
Jappeloup | Directed by Christian Duguay (France 2012) with Guillaume Canet, Marina Hands, Daniel Auteuil, Lou de Laage, Donald Sutherland. Starts February 6
