In yet another young adult movie franchise about a sci-fi dystopia, Thomas wakes up in an enclosed community of young boys surrounded by a haunting labyrinth. No one has remaining memories of their past and their only hope of escape lies on a group of appointed “runners”. With Teresa’s subsequent arrival, more secrets about this futuristic and apocalyptic version of Plato’s Cave are unlocked. This allegory on human nature under strain is well-made and delivers what it promises – but not much more.
The Maze Runner | Directed by Wes Ball (USA 2014) with Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter. Starts October 16.
