Degrees of desperation
Socialist filmmaker Guédiguian stays close to his roots in this tale of an older, newly unemployed but financially secure dockworker in Marseille, whose familial contentment and political convictions are challenged when he is robbed by a much younger worker laid off at the same time. Examining degrees of desperation, Guédiguian resorts occasionally to Jaurès quotes in support of his views. No matter. The film and its excellent cast remain compelling and timely.
