Money. Revenge. Drugs. Child rape. Goose-fucking. Yankees with Australian accents. Musical numbers! Khavn’s look into the urban slums of Manila weaves together the lives of the shanty town’s nihilistic inhabitants (few of whom have all their limbs) at hyper-speed, granting us a kind of punk rock-acid take on Tod Browning’s Freaks. As incredible as the people themselves is the backdrop for the social outcasts – cinematic and genre anarchy and chaos – and yet somehow, it doesn’t seem sloppy. And as trashy as all this sounds, much like Freaks, the film has a poignancy that is unmistakable.
Mondomanila | Directed by Khavn (Philippines, Germany 2012). Starts November 29
