The title of this icy, excruciating family drama means ‘mercy’, but in the sense of forgiveness. Set in a perpetually dark Norwegian industrial town somewhere well north of the Arctic Circle, this strenuous, earnest, but very well-acted movie is about a German expat family caught in several extremely emotional situations. At over two hours, you might be begging for a bit of Gnade to get through the relentless trauma of what are, most depressingly of all, very normal lives.
Mercy (Gnade) | Directed by Matthias Glasner (Germany 2012), with Birgit Minichmayr, Jürgen Vogel, Henry Stange. Starts October 18
