Adapting Strindberg’s play with her own well-crafted script, Liv Ullmann returns with another tale of forbidden love. The below-stairs tryst which takes place between Miss Julie and valet John on Midsummer’s Night is relocated to colonial Ireland, giving their doomed affair a political edge. But despite a handsome Scandinavian production design and intense performances from Chastain and a furrow-browed Farrell, Miss Julie quickly reaches a fever pitch that not even the gravitas of Samantha Morton’s cook can cut.
Miss Julie | Directed by Liv Ullmann, (Norway, Ireland 2014) with Jessica Chastain, Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton. Starts January 22
