Oscar prizewinner Link returns to Africa with a story that sounds almost ridiculously hackneyed: young Ben (Schneider), full of the discontents of boarding school adolescence, is doomed to spend his holiday in Morocco touring with his successful theatre director dad/retired lothario (Tukur). Falling for a local prostitute, he engineers his escape to the mountains. Link’s reticent approach gives the story space, credibly stretching the classic coming-of-age road trip into a journey of closeness in wide open spaces.
Exit Marrakech | Directed by Caroline Link (Germany 2013) with Samuel Schneider, Ulrich Tukur, Hafsia Herzi. Starts October 24
