Ozon at his best
Ozon’s tale of an adolescent schoolboy (an excellent Umhauer) encouraged by his vicariously ambitious teacher (Luchini) to explore his writing talents by insinuating himself into a well-targeted ‘happy family’ and then describing his disruptive influence on their bourgeois ennui is so well acted and put together that the occasional credibility hitch goes almost unnoticed. Timing, unexpected comedy (provided largely by the stalwart Scott Thomas) and a pervasive sense of doomed creative hubris put this latest Ozon up there with the best of his work.
