Based on the true story of Norwegian national hero Thor Heyerdahl, this movie chronicles the attempt to prove that South Americans floated over 4000 miles on small rafts before settling Polynesia. Most surprises predictably fall in the creature-from-below category, and the hammed-up score begins to grate after nearly two hours. None of that, however, detracts from the fact that this is a damn good story, told using inspirational cinematography (by Geir Hartly Andreassen) and thoroughly deserving of its Oscar nomination for best foreign language film.
Kon-Tiki | Directed by Joachim Rønning, Espen Sandberg (Norway 2012) with Pål Sverre, Valheim Hagen. Starts March 21
