Westen hits Berlin cinemas on March 27.
When qualified academic Nelly (Triebel) is granted a GDR exit visa in 1978, she and her son view their accommodation at a reception centre in Marienfelde as temporary. But Nelly’s past and her relationship with a Russian academic make her a target for American debriefing agents and cast new shadows. Schwochow (Der Turm) is a master at decoding unarticulated suspicions and Triebel shines as a woman struggling to put these behind her. Just 25 years ago, Berlin was a divided city. This is what it felt like.
Westen | directed by Christian Schwochow (Germany 2013) with Jördis Triobol and Tristen Goebel. Starts March 27
