After the meta-oddball Ober (2006) comes a study in thematic extremes from maverick Dutch director Von Warmerdam: a dishevelled man gains entrance to an affluent suburban home and begins exploiting a couple’s weaknesses. Intensely disquieting in its portrayal of psychological winners and losers, complete with scars marking characters for survival or extinction, Von Warmerdam’s vision is brilliantly executed but with a take-it-or-leave-it approach to evil that could leave some viewers just as intensely dissatisfied.
Borgman | Directed by Alex von Warmerdam (UK, Netherlands, Belgium 2013) with Jan Bijvoet, Hadewych Minis, Jeroen Perceval. Starts October 2.
