LaBruce’s Pierrot is a modern retelling of Schoenberg’s 1912 melodrama with a transgender twist, intermixed with scenes from the eponymous 2011 HAU stage production. When the title character is found lacking a ‘real’ cock, the quest for a phallic grail ensues. With the dandy delightfully portrayed by LaBruce muse Sachße, the silent B&W film has great fun being a cinephile romp until the bloody end – typical LaBruce, and that’s what makes it great.
