More than 550 shorts in six competitions burst onto Berlin screens in Interfilm’s 31st edition.
The International Competition offers a wide palette, from the initially cutesy but increasingly compelling stop motion of Alice Guimarães and Mónica Santos’ “Amelia & Duarte” (photo) to the raft of intercultural tensions coming to a farcical boil in a cramped Swiss corner store (Christophe M. Saber’s “Discipline”).
The “Confrontations” category proves a short runtime needn’t mean a lack of grit – the brutal arc of Rafael Lara’s rural Mexican tale “Aquí no pasa nada” and deft use of subtitling in Hamy Ramezan and Rungano Nyoni’s police station drama “Listen” take the breath away.
The kaleidoscopic Delikatessen section accommodates everything from two-wheeled love (Bike Shorts) to wry industry reflexivity (On Set – Film Jobs and How to Survive Them), while this year’s Retrospective lenses Kubrick, Resnais and Antonioni.
The festival also hosts a panoply of panels, talks and classes with the likes of longtime Kubrick producer Jan Harlan.
