Efforts have been made in recent years to have standup comedy elevated to some sort of “great American art form”. Top Five sees Chris Rock unfurl his standard. Rock plays a wealthy movie comedian attempting to make it as a serious actor. To prove his worth, he takes a journalist on a tour of his old NY haunts on the eve of his wedding to a reality TV show star. The meta is far from subtle, but there’s surprising vulnerability and humor at its core: a career best.
Top Five | Directed by Chris Rock (USA 2014) with Chris Rock. Starts April 16.
