The 11th Hour
Imaginatively conceived and executed, Morgenthaler’s study of wealthy, middle-aged businesswoman Maria’s (Basinger) desire to have a child is validated above all by Basinger’s credible portrayal of the fine line between frustrated motherhood and atavistic obsessions. It’s when Maria and the film go on a road trip, enlisting the services of junkie (Prentice) to buy a baby on the German-Czech border, that psychology goes psycho – undermining any chances for plausible answers to a real zeitgeist issue.
The 11th Hour (Um jeden Preis) | Directed by Anders Morgenthaler (Germany, Denmark 2014) with Kim Basinger, Sebastian Schipper, Jordan Prentice. Starts July 21
