One wears a mask, the other a dead bird on his head. Armie Hammer and Jonny Depp are quite a couple in Gore Verbinski's newest flick. While Hammer's character John Reid has to struggle with corrupt train company bosses, exceptionally brutal outlaws and a love story, Depp's character Tonto is basically a Native American version of Captain Sparrow from “Pirates of the Caribbean”. And like his maritime counterpart, Tonto may be nuts but he is also the wisest and most fun character in this Western extravaganza.
There are no prizes for guessing that this is gonna be a long and eventful trek and that Tonto will help John to become the lone ranger he is meant to be, but Depp makes sure that it's fun to be along for the ride. This is basic but not just standard summer blockbuster fare with a train chase, lots of explosions, war paint and a mission — a perfect film for a rainy Sunday, and thankfully not in 3D.
