The Jewish exorcist
The tried and true little-girl-inhabited-by-demonic-spirit barely gets a spin here, replacing that Catholic poltergeist with a Jewish one. But that’s about as far as it goes. It’s just a given that the possession genre, unless you do something truly outrageous, can’t be taken that far. So you better go for all out gore and fun. But the tricks are barely worth the make-up they put on little Natasha Calis’ face. Save for a few film stills that may be culled for the purpose of black metal record covers, there’s not much to work with here. Boo.
The Possession | Directed by Ole Bornedal (USA, Canada 2012) with Jeffrey Dean Morgen, Kyra Sedgwick, Natasha Calis. Starts November 8
