Not quite a gem
Recruited by an Irish impresario (O’Dowd) with a proclivity for R&B that he washes down with the hard stuff, four aspiring Aboriginal singers escape poverty and discrimination in the outback and head for Vietnam to entertain the troops. An inevitable – and formulaic – coming of emotional age ensues as confrontation with death and suffering relativises youthful, star-struck ambition, but remnants of the underlying true story and a toe-tapping soundtrack maintain enough authenticity to sustain interest and sympathy.
The Sapphires | Directed by Wayne Blair (Australia 2012) with Chris O’Dowd, Deborah Mailman, Jessica Mauboy. Opens June 20.
