Clavier is a fine comedic actor (QED the success of Qu’est-ce qu’on a fait au Bon Dieu?) but his role here as Claude, a self-involved dentist determined to spend an hour revelling in a vintage jazz album, smacks of bandwagoning. Leconte lets every disaster rain on Claude’s parade: depressive wives, noisome neighbours, hysterical girlfriends, immigrants, illegal plumbers and ailing parents… before tying up the ends under a rainbow of self-awareness. Some laughs. No gold though.
Un heure de tranquilité | Directed by Patrice Leconte (France 2014) with Christian Clavier, Carole Bouquet, Valérie Bonneton. Starts April 16
