After the death of their mother, Canadian-Arab siblings Jeanne and Simon are informed by the family notary of her last maternal wish: they should find their lost father and brother and hand them each a sealed envelope. Through the grown-up twins’ journey to the Middle East and flashbacks to the various phases of their mother’s life, we (and they) gradually discover some horrific truths about their own origins. With stunning images of an unidentified war-torn Middle Eastern country (the script is based on a play by Lebanese writer Wajdi Mouawad), the drawn-out tale spanning a tragic past and an insecure present takes us, scene by scene, towards its all-too-perfectly harrowing final insight.
INCENDIES l Directed by Denis Villeneuve (Canada 2010) with Lubna Azabal, Mélissa Désormeaux-Poulin, Maxim Gaudette. Opens June 23
